Following the spoonful of con-gee you had fed me,

灯辉摇曳满都城听着雨
夜风散开几圈涟漪
你在门外听我练这支曲
我为你备一件蓑衣

As the light of the lantern constantly moves, the sound of rain is heard by the whole capital,
The wind of the night spreads ripples on the water,
As you stand by the doorway listening to me practice this tune
I prepare for you a straw raincoat.

琴声传到寻常百姓的家里
有人欢笑有人在哭泣
情至深处我也落下了泪一滴
随弦断复了思乡的心绪

As the music of the guqin spreads to the homes of the populace
there are those who laugh with joy and there are those who burst into tears.
As those feelings reached the innermost place of my heart, I unwittingly shed a tear.
As a string of the guqin breaks, my longing of my hometown revives again.

你挽指做蝴蝶从窗框上飞起
飞过我指尖和眉宇
呼吸声只因你渐渐宁静
吹了灯让我拥抱着你

you drew a butterfly that flies through the window frame
flew over fingers and forehead
the sound of your breath gradually peaceful
blew out the light and let me embrace you

冬至君王释放我孤身归故地
我背着琴步步望回宫闱里
你哼起我们熟知的那半阙曲
它夹杂着你低沉的抽泣

In winter, the liegelord released me to return to my hometown alone.
As I travel with the guqin on my back, I looked back at the palace with every step.
You started humming the familiar unfinished ditty that we knew,
That ditty which encompassed your sorrowful sobbing.

路途长长长长至故里
是人走不完的诗句
把悲欢谱作曲为你弹起
才感伤何为身不由己

The journey back to my hometown was very long,
akin to a poem that would never end.

And reflect on the circumstances of our parting which are beyond our control.
